It has excellent side-to-side balance and handling precision, thanks to its main components being aligned longitudinally, while its low centre of gravity creates an especially engaging and responsive drive. Active Torque Split AWD
Paired with Lineartronic, the Active Torque Split AWD system responds to traction conditions, the transmission and driver inputs by continuously controlling the torque distribution front to rear.
  • Improved suspension

    Using improved front struts and rear shocks, the suspension has been finely tuned for an enjoyable balance between responsive steering and a smooth, comfortable ride. 2.5i-S and 3.6R-S are also equipped with STABLEX-Ride, a new valve system and larger diameter front strut cylinders, which have improved damping response at low piston speeds and permit damping suppression at high piston speeds for much better stability and ride quality with less body shake.

  • Cradle mount frame

    You’ll enjoy more agile handling and a smoother ride in the Legacy thanks to its Cradle Mount System. And in a collision, it allows the engine to retract under the cabin, lengthening the front crumple zone.

Few other cars drive with the self-assured confidence of the Legacy, so you won’t be surprised by how uniquely it is accomplished. The horizontally-opposed configuration of the SUBARU BOXER engine places the pistons 180 degrees apart, for a lower, flatter profile than other engine types. This gives the engine, and therefore the overall vehicle, a lower centre of gravity and better sense of balance. Further, the pistons’ opposing movements inherently counteract each other, naturally reducing vibration.

    Because the engine block has a flatter profile and sits lower in the chassis, the overall vehicle is more stably balanced and resistant to side-to-side motion than other designs.

    The engine’s flat design is inherently rigid and self-balancing, generating less vibration than V-type or 4 cylinder in-line engines in the same class for durability and reliable performance.

To further reduce noise, vibration, fuel consumption and emissions, we also designed this engine with lower friction and more rigidity.     Already naturally smooth and strong, we improved the Legacy’s 2.5-litre DOHC SUBARU BOXER engine to make it powerful and fuel efficient. We also made specific refinements to improve its mid-to low-range torque so you’ll have more power when you need it from a complete stop. You’ll also find that it’s more responsive around town and more satisfying on the highway, thanks to a remarkable 235-Nm of torque at a lower 4,000 rpm. When combined with the Lineartronic, it’s more fuel efficient and clean-running, making it kinder to your wallet and the environment.

Designed to get the most out of your SUBARU BOXER engine and Symmetrical AWD, the efficient Lineartronic Continuously Variable Transmission keeps the engine in its ideal power range to give the new Legacy its class-leading fuel consumption at 7.7lit./100km on 2.5-litre models. New shift controls keep the ride light, smooth and responsive on both the 2.5-litre and 3.6-litre engines, while the Lineartronic in 3.6R-L also handles the higher-torque output with less mechanical noise for a smoother, quieter drive. The shift controls also have a new stepped variable control that stays in tune with changes in vehicle speed and engine speed, allowing the driver to feel shift points when accelerating to form a strong and comfortable connection between car and driver.
Paddle Shifters
Paddle shifters are mounted on the steering wheel for fingertip control, giving you the power to select the gear ratio of the Lineartronic that best suits your driving situation. They also provide a six-step manual mode for quick response on demand. The result is a sharper and sportier driving experience.
Based on your driving style, SUBARU Intelligent Drive (SI-DRIVE) can adjust the throttle and shifting response to give you immediate power and agility when you crave it in nearly any scenario.
